From time to time I step back and look at how I believe. I poke at it. I run my razor over it to watch it squirm. I put it to the tests of my mind and if I find things I do not think are correct and I rip those parts away so I can look at them under the microscope of my scrutiny. I revaluate and then move on. I believe if your beliefs can not evolve then they do not fit in a universe that is constantly evolving. No matter if it is in science, religion, relationships, or whatever. If things are too rigid they will ultimately break down.
So I have been looking over my ideas and beliefs (on a “religion” stand point). My beliefs follow along the path of a Deist (I’m sure you figured that out if you are here reading this). Yet I wanted to write them down exactly as they are now so as I evolve and change I can go back and look over these:
It starts out simple. I believe in A creator. I believe in one singular being that started the universe; that this Being put into place the laws that govern the universe. I believe after that it has more than likely left the universe to its own devices, more on that later.
I believe that life sprang up on this planet via single cell organisms and evolved on its own accord. Along that evolutionary route humans appeared and have been making a mess of things ever since. I do not believe we were created on purpose just a long string of random happenstances.
I do not believe that this Creator was all knowing and all powerful. I do believe that it was (and maybe is) an entity outside of our scope of reasoning. This entity could be alive but also could be dead. What would the lifespan of such a being be? Also what does worrying about if it is alive or dead do?
I do not worry about an afterlife. I believe that IF there is such a place then I’ll find out after I am dead. Why worry about something “that could be” and instead enjoy the life you have. Enjoy the riches and wonders of living. Breathe in deeply and let it out slowly and marvel at the simplistic pleasures of being alive. Another thought on this is why would something that could create all of the universe worry about something so insignificant as a human and if that human had an afterlife?
Now on the belief that the universe has been left to its own devices that I mentioned above. The most common question against this would be “Why create it in the first place if you are going to leave it alone?” This is actually very easy to answer. I will answer it with other questions of similar nature. Why paint a painting if all you are going to do is hang it on a wall to look at it? Why take a photograph? Why write a novel? Why create a garden/decorative pond in your yard? Can we not say that this Entity/Creator fashioned the universe out of pleasure, something to do, or so it could have something to look at? Some might say that outlook is overly simplifying a Creator, but I say why not? Sometimes the simplest answer is the best.

A look at my beliefs
